Marketing director third highest paid job of 2016

The role of marketing director ranked above pilot and lawyer as the third most highly paid job title in the UK during 2016, according to the ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings report.

With an average pay before tax of £87,890, it was pipped to the post by long-standing elite roles, broker and chief executive, which earn an average annual salary of £133,868 and £123,577 respectively.

The study – which includes bonuses – found that marketing directors’ pay packets range from £44,654 to £110,010, with a median earning of £74,994.

The average sum, however, is down by 2.5% (£2197) from last year.

Tim Bourne, chairman of the Marketing Agencies Association, said this is because businesses are making efficiency cuts in response to increased competition from rival brands.

Entry requirements for marketing director roles usually include a degree and years of experience in a related managerial role. Many even need a qualification from the Chartered Institute of Marketing.
