Twitter to remove 140-character limit on direct messages

Twitter has announced plans to increase the 140-character limit on direct messages (DMs) to 10,000.

The social network hopes this update makes it easier to interact on Twitter,  while boosting the number of private conversations on the site.

The update will come into effect in July, with the social network promising tweets will continue to be limited to 140-characters.

This follows a string of updates to DMs, including allowing users to receive DMs from anyone (previously users had to follow each other to receive a message).

Meanwhile, last week it was announced that Twitter’s chief executive Dick Costolo will be stepping down following Twitter’s weakest quarterly revenue results since its IPO in November 2013. Jack Dorsey, Twitter's co-founder and CEO of Square, will replace Costolo in the interim.
